Beef Cattle Farm
Beef cattle farm, also known as a ranch, is used for rearing beef cattle. Management of
beef cattle farms is not an easy job. It is a huge responsibility. Farm owners have to take care of every little
need of the cattle herd. Beef from a reputed farm is preferred by the consumers and has high demand in the market.
Farm owners are responsible for the nutrition, vaccination and sanitation of the herd. Owners also have to decide
between natural breeding or artificial insemination for crop production. Artificial insemination transfers bull
semen to cows’ vagina by other than natural means. Bulls contribute their genes to the herd for many years and
ultimately affect the quality of beef.
Farm owners must pay attention to the vaccination of newly born
calves and regular checkup of animals by a qualified veterinarian. All animals must be vaccinated every spring and
fall. Any animal showing any signs of infection must be isolated from the herd to prevent the spread of infection.
Flies like face flies, horn flies, stable flies and horse flies are a major threat to the health of the cattle
herd. Flies cause irritation to the animals and carry many disease causing bacteria and viruses. Regular use of
insecticides, sprays, back rubbers, oilers, ear tags, pour-ons, face rubbers and dust bags in every season can
prevent the growth of flies. Records of all animals regarding their treatment and drugs used must be maintained.
Records are examined when cattle are sold or purchased by herd owners. They also give an insight into the medical
history and past treatment of animals and aid veterinarians to treat them better.
Nutrition of animals is also the job of the beef cattle farm owner. Both under and over
nutrition are dangerous. Proper balance of all nutrients is vital for the cattle health and crop production.
National Research Council’s (NRC) publication, Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle, 1996 is the most preferred
standard for beef cattle feed. Water is also a very special part of diet and a medium to add minerals to the beef
cattle feed. Water and feed for beef cattle consumption must also be stored well to reduce the nutrient loss and
prevent any contamination. Improper storage causes loss of the nutrients to the environment. Contamination of feed,
water and pastures by pesticides and bacteria can lead to many diseases.
